This week, our Friday Featured Athlete is Maureen Barkley. Maureen has attended over 300 FitHaus Classes, from Strength and Conditioning, to Yoga to Barre. We love seeing Maureen’s smiling face walk in through the gym doors. She is always willing to push herself, and support everyone around her. Fun side note: Maureen’s sister in law, aunt, and son workout at FitHaus thanks to Maureen’s high praises! Maureen, we are so proud of all of your hard work and dedication!
Q: Tell us a little about you (that we might not know?
MB: I grew up in Mankato, went to college at the University of St. Thomas, where I met my husband Jake of almost 15 years!! We have 3 boys, Owen(14yrs), Liam(10yrs) and Conor(6yrs). Before kids, I was an event coordinator for St. Thomas, then decided to stay at home with the boys and be the president of all things at the Barkley household as well as helping my husband with our small businesses. Our boys definitely keep us busy with their activities! In the summer you can find us at a baseball field or on our boat! In the winter, at a hockey rink or our own outdoor rink! When we do find time, a few favorite family vacations have been the US and British Virgin Islands and closer to home, the North Shore anytime of year. We hope to travel more or as much as our schedules allow, because the kids are growing up too fast and our time spent together is priceless.
Q: What made you decide to try FitHAUS (and what were you doing prior to coming in?
MB: We moved to Orono about 3 1/2 years ago, I was a member at Lifetime for awhile, also working out and running on my own, but I felt something was missing. Being new to the area, I wanted to find a place to workout that was close and get to know people in my community. I heard about FitHAUS through Brittany Kado-Spears (a former owner) and knew it was exactly what I was looking for!
Q: What is your favorite part of FitHAUS?
MB: It has to be the community of people, they have encouraged and motivated me to challenge myself keep up a healthy lifestyle. Not only am I getting a great workout, but I'm with friends who make it more than just a gym. We also exchange recipes, share garden veggies, do wellness challenges together and just enjoy each other's company!
Q: What are some of the accomplishments you're most proud of, and what are your goals going forward?
MB: I have always loved a good workout, but I was never consistent until I found FitHAUS. Personally, I need a coach telling me what to do and how to do it (the right way), which has been very beneficial for me and my fitness goals. I have been able to get out of my comfort zone, push limits and most of all find a little time for myself. I will continue to make my health a priority and try some classes at the new Balanced Barre studio!
Q: How has working out at FitHAUS bettered your life outside the gym?
MB: I love how active my family is, I want to keep up with them as long as I can (age is just a number, right?). I feel better, sleep better, and bring positive energy to my family in our everyday lives. Sometimes maybe too much energy ;) Teaching my kids at a young age to maintain an active and healthy lifestyle is very important to me. My oldest son is a teen FitHAUS member, loves it and ran in the Corn Days 5K with me!
Q: What advice you you give to someone considering joining FitHAUS?
MB: Give it a try! Even if you haven't worked out in a long time, or you're looking for a change, there is something for everyone. You'll have fun, meet great people and feel so good after a tough workout.
Q: Favorite class(es)?
MB: Not sure I have a favorite, they are all awesome! I really enjoy each of the coaches, they have great personalities and unique styles all their own. We work hard, but they make it fun! I am truly grateful for FitHAUS in our community, it's the best!
