This week we would like to feature Katie O’Brien (aka KOB) as our Friday Featured Athlete. Katie has been a FitHAUS member since 2017 and is the perfect example of a FitHAUS Athlete. She is incredibly hard working, kind, humble, and encouraging to everyone around her. She will always greet you with a warm smile and ask how you and your family are doing, and then will bust her butt during each WOD, always putting in 110%. Katie always seems to be pushing herself just a little harder than she did the day before, always getting stronger. You can often find her at 5:30am CrossFit, Saturday morning partner WOD, and Sunday Open Gym. Katie we are so grateful for you and your wonderful presence at FitHAUS. Thank you for choosing us!
1. Tell us a little bit about yourself.
I grew up on a farm and showed pigs at the County/State fair. John and I have lived in Long Lake for ~ 12 years and together have Ellie(21 -a senior at Concordia), Lilli(17 - a senior at Orono), Cael (9- a 4th grader at Orono) and Conlan (7- 2nd grader at Orono).
I’m a nurse and the VP of Operations at People Incorporated,which provides mental health and substance use treatment. One of my primary areas is integration of care - accessing services and incorporating health and wellness into treatment. Last year all of our sites went tobacco-free (a big deal in mental/chemical health). With that, I know a LOT about smoking, vaping, and all things tobacco and recently collaborated with the state of MN to bring a lawsuit against JUUL and it’s marketing to kids. My family gets annoyed with my many tobacco facts, figures, and feelings :)
I love being outside, watching sports, being in our garden and evenings spent on the deck.
Leadville, Colorado is a favorite vacation spot for our family.
2. What made you decide to join FitHAUS? What were you doing prior to coming to FH?
After college, I didn’t do much :) I gradually started running,biking, and boxing. The boxing gym I went to closed and I was a bit lost. John had started doing CrossFit at a nearby gym and wanted me to join, but I didn’t get it the hype.
I resisted for awhile and finally gave in and went to a class. I hated the actual class, but started going regularly and was hooked! After about a year, we decided the community aspect of the gym was important to us and we made the shift to FitHAUS. One of the best decisions we’ve made for our family!
3. What is your favorite thing about FitHAUS?
I know everyone says it, but the community of people couldn’t be better! To know it’s a place our whole family loves to be, that everyone genuinely cares about one another, and that no one takes themselves too seriously is amazing!
4. What are some of the accomplishments related to physical fitness that you are most proud of. Do you have any fitness goals moving forward?
Sports have always been a huge part of my life. I ran TwinCities marathon a few years ago, which given I don’t love running, was an accomplishment. I’ve thought about doing another one, but I’m not committing to anything yet!
5. How had FitHAUS, or being physically active bettered your life outside of the gym?
I’m mentally stronger and much more resilient at life in general when I’m physically active. I love that FitHAUS has so many outstanding people that model strength in so many different ways.
6. What is your favorite class or movement/skill? What is your least favorite movement...like the one that causes the biggest eye roll when your coach says we are doing "X" today;)
I love most gymnastic-y things: pull ups, handstand pushups/walks, general swinging on the rig are all fun. An assault bike/thruster workout would be my worst nightmare. I could really do without either altogether!
7. What advice would you give to someone looking to join FitHAUS?
Just show up. Whatever it is you want out of the gym, you’ll find it at FitHAUS.
