This week we’d like to announce Karen Kasner as our Friday Featured Athlete. Karen has been a dedicated FitHAUS member since the get go. She has attended nearly 600 classes. You can bet that if you go to an 8:15 am class, Karen will be there, whether she’s finding her zen in yoga or feeling the burn in strength and conditioning! Fun Fact about Karen, she LOVES Halloween…especially making her own Costumes! She also loves hiking, and has completed many rigorous hikes. You will often find Karen working out with her best workout buddy Tami Greiber…they have been working out together for over 9 years and almost always come as a pair=). Karen, we are so thankful to have you as a FitHAUS member, and we are confident that you will probably still be doing those burpees when you are 80 years old (see below)!
Q: Tell us a little about you (that we might not know?
KK: I’ve lived in Orono for 15 years with my husband, Mike and 3 boys. I just sent the older twins to college and my youngest is a Freshman at Orono High School. I like to cook (but not bake) and I keep a garden every summer. I have been growing and drying a lot of herbs lately. I also enjoy golf and sewing. Halloween costumes are my favorite thing to make.
Q: What made you decide to try FitHAUS (and what were you doing prior to coming in?
KK: Tami Greiber and I have been working out together for 9 years. We had been going to a personal trainer who was moving his studio. This was shortly after True Champion (the CF gym prior to turning into FitHAUS) opened so we decided to give it a try for a summer. It stuck and 4 years later we are still here at FitHAUS.
Q: What is your favorite part of FitHAUS?
KK: The community! Everyone is so nice, supportive and encouraging no matter what skill level you are at. I mostly appreciate the gals that get me going on Saturday morning when I would rather stay on the couch…you know who you are!!!
Q: What are some of the fitness-related accomplishments you're most proud of, and what are your goals going forward?
KK: Long, physical hikes! Sign me up for any one, any time! Some of my favorites have been the Grand Canyon Rim to Rim, 100 Kilometers on the Camino de Santiago in Spain, Overlook Trail in Zion National Park and many sections of the Superior Hiking Trail. My bucket list still includes the Inca Trail to Machu Picchu, and the full 780 km of the Camino de Santiago.
Q: How has working out at FitHAUS bettered your life outside the gym?
KK: I am so grateful that I am active and can hike and do lots of activities with my family. I hope to be doing burpees when I’m 80 even though I don’t like them that much!
Q: Favorite movements (and least favorite movements)?
KK: My favorite movement is the Turkish getup, but I also like deadlifts. Anyone that has been in class with me knows I do not like to run. A 400 usually requires a “modification” to a 300.
