FitHAUS Featured Athlete...Emma Turnquist

This week we are so pumped to feature FitHAUS Athlete Emma Turnquist. Most of you have probably worked out with Emma and we can bet you’ve said “How is she so fast!?”

Well if you had to ask us, we’d say Emma is some sort of Wonder Woman. She is not only an amazing athlete, but also a mom of 2 young kiddos, a Physician Assistant, an amazing baker and did we mention she sews the cutest kids clothing? On top of all of that, she is strong as heck seems to master a new skill every time she comes in to the gym. We are so happy to have you as part of our FitHAUS family Emma! You are such an incredible woman and don't let a thing stop you! We are so proud of you!

Read below to learn more about Emma:

1.    Tell us a little bit about yourself (something that we may not, job, college, other hobbies or interests, fav vacations spot or movie).

I live in Long Lake with my husband, Kyle, two children, Arne(3.5) and Freya (16 months), and giant dog, Winnie. We moved to the area in2018 from the metro area. I am a physician assistant, and recently started anew position in the division of Gastroenterology at the U of M. Prior to that,I worked in the Hematology/Oncology clinic there for five years. I am fortunate to be able to work three days per week, and spend the other days at home with the kids. In my free time, I like to bake, sew, and be outdoors. One of my favorite random facts is that my ancestors include numerous Viking royalty.

2.   What made you decide to join FitHAUS? What were you doing prior to coming to FH?

Sports and fitness have been a part of my life from a very young age. I grew up competing in slalom/GS skiing, and also did cycling, soccer, running, and horseback riding for most of my life.After having children, I struggled to find a way to balance fitness, work, and being a mom. Before joining FitHAUS, I was doing mostly running, cycling, and strength training on my own. After my daughter was born, I struggled with significant health complications that took a toll on my physical health. I decided to join in the midst of that as a way to distract myself from everything going on and focus on something positive. I was really nervous to join, because I was really weak and afraid I wouldn’t be able to keep up, but I am so glad I did; I can honestly say that joining FitHAUS was, and continues to be, a huge factor in getting back on my feet.

3.    What is your favorite thing about FitHAUS?

The workouts are awesome, but the best part really is the community. I’ve belonged to many gyms in my life, but nothing compares to the community at FitHAUS. It’s such a special group of people! I also love that women genuinely support women at FitHAUS, something that I don’t think is very common in other fitness settings. I love that my daughter can grow up seeing that support, and also have such strong women as role models.

4.    What are some of the accomplishments related to physical fitness that you are most proud of. Do you have any fitness goals moving forward? 

Before having kids, I did a couple of 24 hour cycling races where I biked ~250-300 miles in 24 hours and placed second in the solo female category both times. I would never think about doing it again though, it was rough! My goal currently is to be able to Rx more movements one day.

5.    How has being physically active bettered your life outside of the gym?

I am a better mom and partner when I can include fitness in my life on a regular basis. I am so happy that I found FitHAUS and am able to continue physical activity and challenge my mind and body. 

6.    What is your favorite class or movement/skill? What is your least favorite the one that causes the biggest eye roll when your coach says we are doing "X" today;)

Biggest eye roll: Assault Bike. I think they need to make a kid-size version for us short folk and maybe it wouldn’t be so bad?

Favorite movements would probably be sprints and handstand push ups.

 7.    What advice would you give to someone looking to join FITHAUS?

 I would not hesitate at all to join! Regardless of where you are with your fitness, you will be welcomed with open arms and support, without any judgement.
