FitHAUS Featured Athlete ... Lalo Jimenez

This week, our Friday Featured Athlete is Lalo Jimenez! We are so thankful to have Lalo (and his entire immediate and extended family) as a part of our community! If you've been to FitHAUS, you no doubt have met Lalo! He is at FitHAUS a lot!! He not only works out nearly every day, but he also helps us with childcare. And he is the favorite of all the kids!!! Lalo's work ethic is also second to none. When he's in class, he gives it his all. Every day. And you can just tell that he enjoys every minute of it!! He is such an inspiration to those around him ... and his own kids who see him challenging himself day in and day out to be better. We all know Lalo, but we wanted to find out some additional stuff that we all might NOT know! We asked him some questions, and here's what he had to say:

Q: Tell us a little about you (that we might not know?

LJ: My name is Eugenio Jimenez but I like to be call Lalo, I have two adorable kids Renata and Javi (you guys probably see them running around the gym all the time). Jocelyn (Orono’s IS Spanish teacher) and I have been together for over 10+years and married around 6 years. Right now I work in the service industry, but I still love to go out for dinner, my favorite place so far is Cafe Lurcat best steak ever guys!! I enjoy all kind of outdoors activities, playing with the kids outside, travel, meetING new people, having margaritas on the beach, and just relaxing at home.

Q: What made you decide to try FitHAUS (and what were you doing prior to coming in?

LJ: All my early life I have been an active guy. I walked and hiked, and I also had pretty good, healthy eating habits. It was in my early 20’s when those good habits starting changing into poorer choices. I moved in to the United States from Mexico in 2015 (I think). I was a little chubby to start, and it was a hot summer (which meant back yard grilling and beer .. and literally eating anything and everything). I think it was after Christmas that year when I found myself overweight. I decided it was time to do something about it, so I started running pretty much everyday, and tried to change my eating habits. Later that year we enjoyed one of those big chain gyms and it was fun for a little while, then it became boring, because it was always the same routine, and I found myself trying to find any excuse to skip the gym. It was not until I watched the replay of the 2015 CrossFit games on TV (since I didn't speak English I thought it was like the X Games), but I was surprised watching Mat Fraser, Josh Bridges and Ben Smith throwing heavy barbells and doing butterfly pull ups! I was like holy crap! What is that? I started to research CrossFit a bit more, but didn't know of anywhere to start. It was not until Ben Veach (Jocelyn’s baby brother .. ha, Ben!) started looking so fit, that Jocelyn decided to give CrossFit a try. It only took a few weeks until I decided to quit my conventional gym, and jump into CrossFit. I remember my first class ... a Saturday morning partner WOD. It was double unders and I didn't even know such a thing existed!!! But later that summer I was able to do some ... and even start going unbroken in the Metcons thanks to Katie S's coaching. It was soon that I realized how much fun CrossFit is!! I love that is always different, everyday is a different workout and not boring at all. My only regret is that I didn't find CrossFit and FitHaus before.

Q: What is your favorite part of FitHAUS?

LJ: I will say my favorite part of FitHaus is the amazing community. You get to meet all of these amazing, fit, and strong people (as well as those just starting out, and everywhere in between) and workout with all of them. And, of course, I've been so lucky to help with the kids at FitHAUS ... since I always loved hanging out with kiddos! You should see me walking through the school and getting all the high-fives from the FitHAUS kids!! So much fun!

Q: What are some of the accomplishments you're most proud of, and what are your goals going forward?

LJ: I will say I’m happy to be able to do things like PR back squats. I remember my first 1RM at the FitHaus was 135lbs and that felt super heavy!!! Now I can do twice that weight for many reps. I can Rx Metcons, and it has been super fun to see progress!! My Goals moving forward are the same as day one: get better and stronger (and also, get some of those muscle ups)!!

Q: How has working out at FitHAUS bettered your life outside the gym?

LJ: Life outside of the box is just better; I feel full of energy and stronger and is definitely a good stress relief!

Q: What advice you you give to someone considering joining FitHAUS?

LJ: My advice to people is: if you're having a hard time enjoying your workout, go and try any of the classes at FitHAUS! You’ll be so happy came in, and you'll get to meet all the amazing members and coaches. And your body will thank you.

Q: Favorite movements (and least favorite movements)?

LJ: My favorite movements are (I have a lot, but here are a few): Double Unders, Assault Bike, burpees, squat cleans, back squats, rope climes, running, and light metcon snatches.

My least favorite movements (well, I won’t say least favorite, but I definitely need to work on): Muscles ups, HSPU and heavy jerks!

So glad that Ben and Jocelyn encouraged you to come to FitHAUS!! It just wouldn't be the same without you, Lalo!!
